Our Solera Wild Life and the Safety of Your Pets |
Solera residents live in a transition zone between the mountains and the desert; we are in what would have originally (and not too long ago) been overlapping habitats. By having the golf course, we have managed to maintain some of the wild habitat that predators and prey would have normally used. There are also linking trails and habitat to the more remote areas to our North and South. Many residents treasure the wildlife and look forward to possible sightings. On the other hand, people who have pets need to be concerned about their protection. Unfortunately, there are some residents who are not aware of the dangers in this regard and never give a thought to letting their pets run free, especially in their back yards. Those same folks may unknowingly leave food and water out for their pets which, in turn, attract nocturnal visitors and possibly daytime visits as well. | Following are some recommendations to keep your pets as safe as possible:- Make sure your pet is identified with an I.D. tag including current phone number even if they are “indoors” only. Accidents happen.
- Have your pet micro-chipped at the Vet. In case your pet loses his collar, it could save him from being sent to a shelter or worse.
- Do not leave your pet outdoors unsupervised especially if you live next to the golf course or green belt areas. Keep in mind coyotes and bobcats are seen on the golf course and green belt on a regular basis and can easily jump our fences and travel throughout Solera at night. It is not rare to see poisonous snakes and large predatory birds (hawks, eagles, etc.) as well as reported mountain lion sightings.
- Do not leave pet food outdoors to attract unwanted visitors.
- Keep your pet on a leash when walking throughout the community.
Especially at risk are cats as they are fearless and can roam several miles at night. The best precaution is to keep your cat indoors at all times. Following are suggestions to help cats adjust from being “outdoor” cats to “indoor” cats: - Upon moving to Solera, the ideal is to keep your cat indoors at once. They may meow for a while, but will eventually give up (one of mine took 3 months).
- For those cats who will not adapt to being indoors, try using a “bungee” type leash and harness especially designed for cats with an “easy” screw-in tie-down available at stores such as Petco and Petsmart. A swivel snap hook to connect the leash to the tie-down is available at stores like Walmart and Home Depot. My other cat has adapted to “walkabouts” on the leash in the back yard and the tie-down for naps during the day when I’m gardening close by. This process takes time and patience.
- Of course, indoor cats will need more attention and play time.
- Any questions regarding adapting cats will be answered on Solera’s web site, Solerafun, in the “Neighbor to Neighbor” section..

| WOULD YOU LIKE TO MEMORIALIZE OR HONOR A LOVED ONE OR SOME OTHER SPECIAL PERSON OR ORGANIZATION ... AND ... HELP TO BEAUTIFY YOUR COMMUNITY AT THE SAME TIME??? | The Solera Homeowners Association is implementing a commemoration program wherein a concrete bench, tree, or small garden area would be placed in the community in their honor. A plaque in their memory/honor would be affixed to benches and would be placed in small garden areas. For individual trees, an attractive multiple donor plaque with individual leaves will be placed in a prominent location in the clubhouse. While consideration will be given to donor requests for specific plant materials and placement of plants and benches, final determination will be at the discretion of the Solera HOA Common Area Landscape Advisory Committee. (The donor will be notified of the placement location and type of tree.) Donation costs vary - starting at $131. Forms are available at the clubhouse or can be downloaded from this site by clicking HERE. For more information, contact Leeann Weiskopf at 845-9289. | | EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS KITS The Emergency Preparedness Club is selling Emergency Kits to residents. To see the contents of these kits, click HERE. Times and locations will be posted when these kits are being sold in the clubhouse. For more information concerning this service, please contact Vicki at 769-9372. |
